Let’s say that your business has been successfully transacting business online for a number of years; you deliver great information about your product, people like your product, and customers use your Web site to purchase your product. You’re taking advantage of innovative online marketing strategies and you’re seeing a nice rise traffic, clicks and consumption. Not an unusual scenario; this is basic economics in 2013. But if you’re a smart businessperson (which, of course, you are, because you’re reading this blog), you’re also asking yourself, “What can I do to increase opportunities to get my services/product/content/IP in front of even more people?” You like what’s happening, but there’s got to be more: more customers, more visibility, more profit.

Not that long ago, you would have hired some partner biz dev and channel people to get your “stuff” to places where more people could see it. But we’re well into the 21st century, and with the advent of the API Economy, we’re in the midst of a completely new model for getting your stuff (content, products, intellectual property, fill in the blank) in front of those who could likely consume it. I’m reluctant to say that there’s a “shift” going on, because that implies that we’re moving at a measured pace; it might be more accurate to say that we’re racing towards a model of commerce and transactions that are enabled by the easy-to-develop and efficient functionality of APIs.

There’s no better way to create channels than to use APIs. They allow your applications (and the data used by those applications) to be transmitted to, and among, other applications so that users get a more customized and usable experience. Our view at SOA Software is that this is the commerce engine that’s powering a major part of the world economy now. But there’s a major caveat that comes with that: for an API to be valuable and deliver on its promise, it must operate with proper governance, management, development and deployment. Without ensuring that the API development, delivery and management adhere to security and functional guidelines, you’ll expose data that you shouldn’t, and you won’t be able to provide your API in the various platforms where your users consume information (mobile devices, cloud applications, on-premise, Web apps).

You’ve likely heard a lot about APIs and API management tools over the past couple weeks. This is great news because it validates the explosive adoption of APIs as a commerce and distribution tool. But the only way that any API management system can truly be valuable is it if was fundamentally designed to broker authorized services and apply necessary security policies. This is precisely why we created API Gateway; nothing on the market existed that was so comprehensive in its offering. We know from our customers that without the ability to provide a brokering, management and security tool, their APIs were going to be limited in what they can deliver.
